Biography

Warren Chang (1957-) was born in Monterey, California and graduated the Art Center College of Design with honors in 1981.  Upon graduation he was hired as a staff illustrator painting box covers for the Atari game company and in 1983, he branched off as a freelance illustrator working in the advertising and entertainment industry in Los Angeles.  In 1990 he moved to New York City and from the period until 2001 he painted close to 200 book covers for various publishing houses.  His work has won many awards of merit from the Society of Illustrators in New York and Communication Arts Magazine.

In 2000, he moved back to California, eventually settling in Northern California and teaching drawing and painting at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco while simultaneously pursuing a career in fine art. In 2003, he won "Best of Show" at the Salon International held in Texas and in 2004 he won second prize in the International Artist magazine competition.
This year he was awarded the Southwest Art Award of Merit at the California Art Club's 97th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition.  He has been profiled in American Art Collector, American Artist, Artworks and International Artist magazines.  In 2007 his work was featured on the cover of American Artist magazine along with a 7 page article. In 2008 his work appeared twice on the covers of International Artist magazine accompanying his 7 part series of instructional painting articles he authored. He is a artist member of the California Art Club and has exhibited every year since 2002 in their annual Gold Medal exhibition and also is a Signature member of the Oil Painters of America.

Primarily a figurative artist, Chang paints the human figure in contemporary environments, including biographical interiors of his studio and classroom, as well as outdoor genre subjects such as the fieldworkers of Monterey County where he grew up.

Artist Statement:

Figure in Landscape:
A common theme in my outdoors subjects is of the fieldworkers of Monterey County where I grew up.  These paintings are inspired in part by the writings of John Steinbeck and the ambience of growing up in Monterey County.  There is a historical precedent starting with 19th century French peasant painter Francois Millet (1814-1875) and the Naturalist movement in general of the mid-19th century.  Artists Winslow Homer (1836-1910) and Eastman Johnson (1824-1906) both painted the cotton field workers in America and later Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) painted the fieldworker in his regional works, so I feel I am continuing this tradition sincerely.   This genre of art could fall into any number of categories from Naturalism to Regionalism to Social Realism.  My work though inspired by the paintings of the past are however records of our times.

Interiors
My primary goal in painting the figure in interior is to capture an ambience of mood and emotion through manipulation of light and space.  I accomplish this working with a limited palette with emphasis on grays and browns along with the observation of close value relationships.
Much of my interior subjects are biographical in nature depicting my studio and classroom environment.  I find an artist’s environment to be rich in character with all the accoutrements, including the people who inhabit the environment- the artists and models.  The works of Vermeer (1632-1675) in particular are of great interest to me but he was not my original source of inspiration.  People had remarked on the similarity of my work to his and so since then he has become a source of influence to me along with the work of Diego Velasquez (1632-1675).  I have also found inspiration in the work of 20th century realist John Koch (1909-1978), who painted many of his most important paintings within the confines of his New York apartment.
