James Bas
by Warren Chang on 6/25/2010 12:51:24 PM

James Bas, is the sexton at the church my wife and children attend.  He had a magnificent face, reminded me of the portraits by the great 19th century Russian painter Ilya Repin, and I asked him to pose in my studio.  Last night I finished this portrait of him in the 2nd of two sitting totaling 4 hours from life.

Hi Juju,
Thanks so much for posting and your kind words.
I hope you, Neil and Jae will be able to attend the "Hard Times" reception or at least have a chance to view the exhibit during its stay in New York.

Hello Warren,

I admire your work very much. I especially enjoy the way you seem to manage the particular with the casualness of mark. This portrait bears much resemblance to the Munich school. Repin and Duveneck are heroes of mine. You are a wonderful painter.
