Plein-air painting: Chasing the Light
by Warren Chang on 11/11/2008 4:48:21 PM

Day one: First day of painting.
I've been teaching a landscape class in San Francisco and its been a challenge but a fun experience.  With the constantly changing light and unpredictable weather conditions, painting in plein-air is always a challenge.  Fortunately, the weather has been unusually mild in San Francisco and so the following painting was completed over two days with fairly consistent weather.  The light pattern was changing as it fell across the dome but in general not too difficult conditions.  Both days I painted in the afternoon from around 1:30pm to 4::30pm.
Degas described painting in plein-air as the "tyranny of nature" and in some ways I can see what he means.  Its difficult trying to capture something in a more unique way than what we are all used to seeing.

Day Two: Palace of Fine Arts, 12" x 16" oil on linen panel
"Not quite finished but I think I'll leave it this way."

Hi Ruth,
Thanks for your comment and I'll definitely keep painting. By the way, the title of the painting is "Palace of Fine Arts" currently at the Principle Gallery in Virginia.

Hi Warren,
I love the brightness in this painting and you know how to bring it out in your work.

I watched a demo tape of you lecturing a class on painting. You mentioned that you painted field workers in Monterey or an area near by.

It reminded me of our location. I live in Fort Myers, Florida. Not far from us is the town of Immokalee Florida. The town is made up of many migrant and local field workers. It is a tiresome job with little pay and harsh living conditions. If you are ever in our area, it would be may be worth your time and effort to check it out. I am certain you could do some awesome artwork from the experience.

Dear Joan,
That's very interesting. I sometimes wonder if the subject of the fieldworker is a more local and regional subject, so its good to know that this subject reaches farther beyond the borders of my area.
